About Verity Leung

Verity Leung has been studying classical piano since a young age. Now at age 14, her playing has been described as “sensitively nuanced” and “artistically thoughtful” with “beautiful fluency and facile flair”. Verity is the recipient of many piano awards on the provincial and national levels. She won her age category in two consecutive editions of the Canadian Music Competition (2021 and 2022). At the B.C. Provincials, she was the Winner of Junior A Piano and Junior Canadian Piano in 2021, Runner-up of Junior B Piano and Winner of Intermediate Canadian Piano in 2023. She is two-time Gold Medalist of the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest examination mark, most recently in 2022 for Level 10 piano. She made her orchestral debut with the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra in 2022, playing the second and third movements of Mendelssohn’s first piano concerto.

Meeting “Ajaat”

When Verity was six years old, she came across the story of 10-year-old “Ajaat” in an animation produced by Kinbrace Community Society. Ajaat was forcibly displaced from his home, and his family had to flee the country to seek safety and refuge. Following the storyline, little Verity became deeply concerned about the misfortune of Ajaat. She was shocked to discover that the story of Ajaat was not fictitious: it was based on the true stories of over 100 million people globally who are on the move for similar reasons. Sad, but motivated, Verity resolved to do little things with great love to help those in need.

Community Impact

In 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, Verity recorded and released a CD album with all proceeds donated to Kinbrace, amounting to approximately $25,000. In 2022, Verity held the stage at TEDxYouth, where she delved into the pressing issues faced by refugee claimants, encouraging members of the wider community to take initiative and make a difference. Her TEDx Talk serves as a rallying call for empathy and solidarity, urging the audience to lend their talents, time and support to those in need. She has also actively participated in the Kinbrace Ride for Refuge for many years, as a team captain raising another $20,000, demonstrating her unwavering support for refugee claimants. Through her efforts, Verity continually inspires others to be a part of the solution to the global crisis.
