About Verity Leung

Verity Leung has been studying classical piano since a young age. Now at age 15, her playing has been described as “sensitively nuanced” and “artistically thoughtful” with “beautiful fluency and facile flair”. Verity is the recipient of many piano awards on the provincial and national levels. She won her age category in two consecutive editions of the Canadian Music Competition (2021 and 2022). At the B.C. Provincials, she was the winner of various categories in 2021, 2023 and 2024. She is a three-time Gold Medalist of the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest examination mark, most recently in 2024 for National ARCT piano. Last summer, Verity spent a month at New England Conservatory under a generous scholarship provided by Morningside Music Bridge studying from world-renowned musicians like Dang Thai Son, Wha Kyung Byun, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Krzysztof Jablonski and Boris Slutsky.

Meeting “Ajaat” and Becoming Neighbours

When Verity was six years old, she came across the story of 10-year-old “Ajaat” in an animation produced by Kinbrace Community Society. Ajaat was forcibly displaced from his home, and his family had to flee the country to seek safety and refuge. Following the storyline, little Verity became deeply concerned about the misfortune of Ajaat. She was shocked to discover that the story of Ajaat was not fictitious: it was based on the true stories of over 100 million people globally who are on the move for similar reasons. Sad, but motivated, Verity resolved to do little things with great love to help those in need. Through friendships with families whose stories are like Ajaat’s, Verity has learned that people are more alike than different, and that loving others means becoming neighbours—welcoming Ajaat and everyone around with kindness, care, and shared life.

Community Impact

In 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, Verity recorded and released a CD album with all proceeds donated to Kinbrace, amounting to approximately $25,000. In 2022, Verity held the stage at TEDxYouth, where she delved into the pressing issues faced by refugee claimants, encouraging members of the wider community to take initiative and make a difference. Her TEDx Talk serves as a rallying call for empathy and solidarity, urging the audience to lend their talents, time and support to those in need. She has also actively participated in the Kinbrace Ride for Refuge for many years, as a team captain raising another $20,000. In June 2024, Verity’s debut solo charity concert was a resounding success raising $21,495 from 180 donors, in-person and online. Through her efforts, Verity continually inspires others to be a part of the solution to the global crisis. In this second edition of In Veritate et Caritate, Verity invites members of her school community to participate by hosting a Maker Market and playing as guest performers.

Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology (VISST)

Maker Club: Students learn a variety of digital fabrication techniques such as laser engraving, 3D printing, sticker and button making, heat pressing, and more. Once they are trained, students pursue their own projects following their creativity. They will host a Maker Market before the concert and during the intermission.

Music Club: The VISST Music Club consists of several bands whose members span all grades across the school. The bands can be heard practicing regularly, especially before school from 9-10am, and recently performed at a school showcase event.
